At the beginning of new academic year, the library held the Freshman Events, namely ‘Library Exploration’, ‘Postcard to My Future Self’ and ‘Wishlist for Books’ dedicated to welcoming the new students. Students could engage in any of these activities and receive customized gifts for their participation.
These activities were designed for students to familiarize with the facilities and academic services of the library. Students that participate in the ‘Library Exploration’ activity are asked to take group photos according to the requirements of the task card. It helps them to explore and learn how to search for books, where to find printers, and how to use many other library services by themselves. ‘Postcard to My Future Self’ is a self-motivational activity and a reminder that the library will always be there to help students with their problems in the future. ‘Wishlist for Books’ was designed to promote reading for students to expand their mental horizons.
These events attracted a large number of participants and also received numerous positive feedbacks from the participants, many of which expressed their gratitude and enjoyment in attending the events. Yan chen, a year one undergraduate student said: “Thanks to these activities, I discovered how many useful services the library has to offer and how to use them. Now I feel more confident and ready for the start of my academic studies. ”
In the means of providing support for the freshmen students to adjust with the campus life of XJTLU and getting them familiar with XJTLU library services and current resources, the library held a series of Induction activities including 10 sessions of on-site Library Tour and 8 sessions of Library Resource & Service Induction Training during the first period of the new academic year.
Shangyuan Qian, a year one undergraduate student, mentioned that the Library Resource and Service Induction Training sessions were very useful and accommodating, especially the OPAC course. She states “For a freshman like myself, getting familiar with accessing the library resources is an essential way to search for materials appropriately. It will accommodate my future studies.”
During the new semester, from September 1 to September 22, the library issued the must-know library etiquettes on the first floor. In that exihibition, we laid out the library rules for everyone to learn and see, positioned at the entrance so that they would be noticeable for anyone entering and leaving the library. We wish to make the library the most fitting environment for learning and this exihibition allows people to know how to behave properly during their stay.
Find the collections of our new books and the recommended books placed on the new bookshelves located in the 7th, 8th and 9th floor of XJTLU Library! You will have the chance to view all the latest books, ranging from categories such as Social Sciences, Fine Arts, Technology, Science, and Medicine. The bookshelves are placed right before your eyes once you step out of the elevator. The library kindly invites all the students to read and borrow these new books.
This way of presenting new arrivals collections could help improve finding new books more efficiently as well as making the books look more appealing to the readers. It serves a window to convey information about new books, but also as a bridge that connects the readers with publishers, libraries, and authors. At the same time, through this adjustment, the library wishes to create a comfortable reading experience for readers.
On October 29th, the 26th “Living Library” took place in Central Building, G23W. On this occasion, XJTLU Library invited 10 inspirational people that presented as “living books” to share their mesmerizing stories and valuable experiences. Yuzhu Jiang, a Dunhuang watchman showed the map of Dunhuang to the readers and made a detailed introduction for them. Xingzhao Duan Shared the difficulties and challenges of her volunteering life abroad. And Long Xiao brought his creative internship experience in Tencent Investment Incubation Center.
“Living Library” has achieved great responses from the very enthusiastic participants. A student from the Department of Mathematics stated “I believe that with the valuable experience gained by reading from these ‘living books’, I will gain confidence for my future and hopefully I can become an interesting ‘living book’ for others too.”
The living library concept is designed to create a constructive personal dialogues between the speakers and the participants. This is an essential opportunity for students to gain intercultural learning experiences and achieve a personal development personal developments through face-to-face sharing and consulting session. The library will continue to try their best to inspire readers and create an influential experience in their reading life.
XJTLU library has held two “Basic Training Courses on Photoshop” tutorials in computer room 455 on 30th and 31st of October. The lecturer of the tutorials was Xu Yuanyuan, a university student with abundant experience in Photoshop training.
During the two basic courses, the students were able to follow the pace of the lecturer and gradually mastered some simple operations. After the tutorials, students have shared that their interest towards Photoshop has increased and they look forward to attend library training courses in the future.
