GIS : Introduction

What is GIS?

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a cross-disciplinary tool for viewing and analyzing information with a spatial component. Working with superimposed maps and data in GIS brings a new perspective to fields including marketing, health and emergency services, agriculture, archaeology, environmental science, energy and more. GIS at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University

GIS is used by several disciplines at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University such as Urban Planning and Design, Civil Engineering, Architecture and Design, Environment Science, Business School and so on. GIS has the potential to be used by many more disciplines , any research that contains a spatial element is a potential GIS application area. Besides that, GIS is used for many purposes that range from calculating space, analyzing spatial relationships, patterns or trends, to cartography, visualization, and site management.
