Suzhou Planning Bureau releases GIS data of Suzhou city region except Suzhou Industrial Park with its coverage no greater than six square kilometers to Chinese citizens only. Anything greater than that is not the local bureau’s decision to make – data requesters should get approval from higher jurisdiction officials (Provincial level at least). Foreign passport holders have to get background screen and approved by the Provincial Secrecy Bureau before obtaining or accessing these data regardless how small the data coverage is. If the GIS data coverage is smaller than six square kilometers, the research team leader/module lecturer with an official university recommendation letter in Chinese and other supporting materials can go to Suzhou Planning Bureau at 747 ShiQuan Street to request and obtain the data. A confidentiality agreement is required to be signed by who obtains the data on site which has to be restricted in use to the research group or the associated Chinese students within the module.
Suzhou Industrial Park Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation Co., Ltd. sells GIS data within Suzhou Industrial Park case by case, depending on the information and size of the area. For four neighborhood sites of roughly 3 sqkm including all information they surveyed, they charge 3,100 RMB per sqkm. Similarly, a confidentiality agreement is required to be signed by who obtains the data which has to be restricted in use to the research group or the associated Chinese students within the module.
